Dream on! Global engagement - after international experience

Dream on!

Global engagement after my international experience

Today, I’m closing a special chapter: my international internship through PXL has come to an end. What started on January 31st as an exciting journey to South Africa grew into an experience that shaped me on so many levels, both as a teacher and as a person.

I literally drew out my learning curve: from wonder to missing my kids, from adjustment to connection and eventually to confidence, growth and deep respect. There were tough moments like missing my family, or facing inequality, the poor condition of the roads or the lack of learning materials. But those lows made the high levels feel even more meaningful.

I witnessed a different educational culture, a different vision on learning, and I got to be part of a team that truly valued and trusted me. The warmth and respect I received gave me wings. At one point, I even thought: I don’t want to leave!

During our final reflection at PXL, we all shared our stories, from Aruba to Vietnam, Spain to Gambia. We heard recurring themes: incredible hospitality, deep respect, but also moments of homesickness or even racism.

It showed us clearly: global engagement is not a holiday, it’s a journey of openness, resilience and personal growth.

What am I taking home?

✅ A fresh mindset and new teaching methods

✅ A deep respect for cultural differences

✅ A renewed awareness of what truly matters

✅ And above all: the insight that education all over the world is about connection, trust, and creating opportunities

As a final touch, we received a symbolic diploma of participation. Just a piece of paper, but one that represents a world of experiences, emotions, and learning.

I’m grateful for the people I met. For the children who taught me to put things in perspective. For the trust I was given as a (future) teacher.

This international experience wasn’t an ending. It’s the beginning of a broader view, a warmer approach, and a lifelong commitment to global engagement.

Dream on. Grow on. Teach on.
